The inaugural Borneo Cardiology Conference (BCC 2026) was conceived to address cardiovascular care in resource-limited settings. Challenges in delivering optimal care under these conditions can only be surmounted by combining the efforts of every stakeholder in this ecosystem.
To celebrate this event, we are pleased to invite you to join us for the BCC2026, bearing the theme - "Optimal care in resource limited settings". This event will be held on 25-26 June 2026 at the Pullman Hotel in Kuching, Sarawak. We hope to bring together leading cardiologists, researchers and other healthcare professionals to share latest scientific knowledge and approaches to delivery of cardiovascular care, and how these recommendations can be applied when resources are limited. The sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, valvular heart disease, arrhythmia, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, congenital heart disease, and many more. We hope this event will be a platform for participants to exchange innovative ideas and network with peers, and for industry to showcase cutting-edge solutions to the cardiology community in our region.
BCC 2026 also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Department of Cardiology, Sarawak Heart Centre. In 2001, cardiac services were established at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) in Kuching, as the third cardiology centre of the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. Together with cardiothoracic surgery and cardiac anaesthesia, cardiologists and staff of the Department of Cardiology provided the first comprehensive cardiac services by a public hospital in East Malaysia.
The Department of Cardiology at SGH, established by Dr Sim Kui Hian and Dr Ong Tiong Kiam, heralded a new dawn in public sector cardiology services in Sarawak. Although the initial team was small, the vision to be a centre of excellence provided the inspiration and energy that powered the early years. It was clear at the beginning that delivering an excellent cardiology service, while being the core business, could only deliver real value for the entire healthcare ecosystem when coupled with being recognised as a world-class training centre for the cardiology subspecialty, and one that undertakes leading-edge clinical research. These three core missions have seen our centre grow from strength to strength, as did our partners and collaborators who had worked with us.
Over the last 25 years, members of our department treated over 300,000 patients and trained nearly 10% of the nation's cardiologists, with half (still) remaining in the public sector. In addition, we have also trained cardiologists from all over Southeast Asia, the Middle East and East Asia. Cardiologists in our department have engaged in landmark clinical research projects which directly contributed to the development of new treatments now used all over the world.
We look forward to welcoming you to Kuching. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy the sessions, and BCC2026 will bring you lasting memories and rewarding experience.
